How to Search Your Screenshots by What's Inside Them on Mac
A folder of files named by timestamp is not an archive, it is a pile. The useful question is never "which Tuesday was that" — it is "the one with the invoice number in it", and that is a question a filename cannot answer.
Because the text in every capture is recognised at the moment you take it, the library is searchable by content. Type a phrase that appeared in a screenshot and the matching captures surface.

Search for something that was in the image
An error code, an invoice number, a name in a column, a button label. Search also matches the source application, the window or page title, the browser URL, and the entities that were detected — so "Safari" and "invoice" are both valid queries.
It is case- and diacritic-insensitive, so you do not have to remember how something was capitalised.

Narrow with the destination tabs
Recent, Today, Pinned, Favorites, Edited, Motion, Extension and Trash. These are fixed views that are always there, so "the recording I made today" is two clicks rather than a query.
Recordings carry a play badge in every view, so a mixed library stays readable at a glance.

Switch to the view that suits the question
Six of them, and the right one depends on what you are looking for:
- Timeline — a real calendar month, each day a fanned stack of that day's captures with a count badge. This is the one for "the Tuesday of the outage".
- Comfortable and Compact grids — trading size for density.
- List — for scanning names and dates.
- Filmstrip — for stepping through a sequence in order.
- Compare — two captures side by side, which is what you want for a before-and-after.

Keep the ones you will want again
Star favourites and pin the ones you keep returning to. Batch selection works with ⌘-click and ⇧-range, so clearing a day of throwaway captures is one action rather than forty.

Let smart folders do the filing
A smart folder is a set of field, operator and value rules, evaluated continuously. Captures matching them appear there without being moved or copied — so one capture can sit in several at once, and a new capture joins the moment it qualifies.
"Everything from Safari containing the word invoice" is a folder you define once and never maintain.

In Snip Studio's private container on your Mac, under generated filenames rather than readable ones, with owner-only permissions. They are excluded from Time Machine and iCloud backups and marked so Spotlight does not index them. That is deliberate: the search index is inside the app, not spread across your disk.

Why this replaces naming files
The usual advice for screenshot chaos is to rename files as you go. It works, briefly, and then it stops — because renaming is a tax paid at capture time for a benefit that arrives weeks later, and nobody keeps paying it.
Recognising the text automatically inverts that. You pay nothing at capture time, and the benefit is there whenever you need it. The screenshot of an error you took in March is findable in June by the error code, without you having predicted in March that you would want it.
Common problems
A capture you remember is not in the results
Search matches recognised text, so a capture with no text in it — a photograph, a chart with no labels, an icon — will not match a text query. Try the source app, or the Timeline view for the date.
Too many results
Add a second term, or narrow with a destination tab first. A smart folder is the durable answer if you keep running the same query.
Search finds nothing at all
Check the Trash tab — deleted captures are recoverable until permanently removed.
The text in an old capture was never recognised
Recognition happens at capture time. A capture imported from elsewhere may not have been read; open it and run recognition from the OCR view.
Spotlight cannot find your screenshots
That is deliberate. Originals are excluded from Spotlight indexing so their contents are not exposed to system-wide search. Search inside Snip Studio instead.
