Mac Screenshot Not Working? 12 Fixes

Screen capture fails in a small number of predictable ways, and almost all of them are one of three things — a permission, a hotkey conflict, or content that is deliberately protected. Work down this list in order.

"Not working" covers three different problems: nothing happens at all, something happens but the result is black, or the capture works and then seems to vanish. The fixes below are ordered by how often each turns out to be the cause.

Start here — the first three fix most cases

  1. Grant Screen Recording, then relaunch

macOS requires this of any app that captures the screen, and it is by far the most common cause. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording and make sure Snip Studio is enabled.

Then quit and reopen the app. This is the step people miss: the permission only takes effect on a fresh launch, so enabling it and carrying on will look like it did not work.

Enable, then quit and reopen. Both halves are required.
  2. Check whether a hotkey has been claimed

If one capture mode does nothing but others work, another application has taken that key combination. macOS gives a global shortcut to one app without telling you.

Rebind it in Snip Studio's settings, or sidestep the problem entirely by capturing from the HUD, which needs no keyboard.

Every capture hotkey can be reassigned if something else has claimed it.
  3. Look in the library, not on the desktop

Captures go into Snip Studio's library, not to a folder. If you were expecting a file on the desktop, nothing is broken — the capture is in the library, and a file gets written when you export or drag one out.

Search by a word that was in the capture if you cannot see it in the recent view.

If it is still not working

4. The capture is black

Two causes. Either the permission has not taken effect — go back to fix 1 and make sure you relaunched — or the content is protected against capture at the source. Streaming video and some secure windows exclude themselves deliberately, and no capture tool can override that.

5. Check free disk space

A nearly full startup disk causes captures to fail quietly. Check System Settings → General → Storage. A few gigabytes free is enough.

6. Restart the app

Quit Snip Studio completely and reopen it. This clears a stuck capture session, which occasionally happens if a capture was interrupted by a system event mid-drag.

7. Check for a conflicting capture tool

Two screen-capture utilities running at once can fight over the same hotkeys and over screen access. Quit any other capture app and test again.

8. Scroll capture specifically is failing

Scroll capture needs to drive the window it is capturing, which is a step beyond taking a picture of the screen. Try Manual mode and draw the region yourself, and check the permission list in the Privacy Policy. Some windows — virtualised lists that recycle their rows — genuinely cannot be captured whole.

9. Recording fails but screenshots work

Recording uses the same Screen Recording permission but also touches audio. If the video records and the audio does not, check which audio source was selected before starting; none is enabled by default. See how to record your screen.

10. The HUD has disappeared

It collapses to a small circle and sits on a screen edge — it may be on a display you are not looking at, or tucked against an edge behind another window. Reopen it from the menu-bar command centre, which is always available even when the app runs without a Dock icon.

11. Test in a new user account

Create a test account in System Settings → Users & Groups and try there. If capture works in the new account, the problem is in your user's settings or login items rather than the app or macOS.

12. Reinstall

Last resort, and rarely necessary. Deleting the app removes its container and the captures in it, so export anything you want to keep first.

A thirty-second diagnostic

Try capturing from the HUD rather than a hotkey. If the HUD works and the hotkey does not, the problem is a shortcut conflict — go to fix 2. If neither works, it is a permission — go to fix 1. That single test separates the two most common causes.

Why the hotkeys are Control-Option

Worth understanding, because it explains a whole category of failure that does not happen.

Global shortcut space is contested. Conferencing tools, note-takers, launchers and window managers all register their own, and when two applications claim the same combination, macOS quietly gives it to one of them. That is why a capture shortcut can stop working the day after you install something unrelated.

Snip Studio's capture hotkeys are Control-Option combinations, which far fewer applications claim. They register system-wide and need no Accessibility permission. And when a collision does happen, the HUD is a complete alternative that involves no keyboard at all — so a single conflict never leaves you unable to capture.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Mac screenshot black?

Usually Screen Recording permission has been granted but the app has not been relaunched — the permission only applies to a fresh launch. Otherwise the content is protected against capture at the source, as streaming video is.

Why did my capture hotkey stop working?

Another application has almost certainly claimed the same combination. Rebind it in Snip Studio's settings, or capture from the HUD, which needs no keyboard.

Where did my screenshot go?

Into Snip Studio's library, not onto the desktop. A file is written only when you export or drag a capture out. Search the library by a word that appeared in the capture.

What permission does screen capture need?

Screen Recording, granted in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording. The app must be quit and reopened afterwards for it to take effect.

Why does my recording have no sound?

No audio source was selected before you started. Microphone, system audio and both-mixed are separate choices and none is on by default.

Can two capture apps run at the same time?

They can, but they may fight over the same hotkeys. If captures started failing after installing another tool, quit it and test again.
