Seven hotkeys, one per capture mode, all in the Control-Option range. This is the complete set, what each is genuinely for, and how to reach every one of them without touching the keyboard at all.

Everything without the keyboard
Every mode above is also one hover away in the HUD — the floating circle that sits on any screen edge and opens into a pill of nine capture modes plus recording, with 3, 5 and 10 second delay presets beside them.
This matters more than it sounds. If a shortcut has been claimed by another app, or your hands are already on the trackpad, or you are demonstrating something and cannot spare a hand, the HUD is a complete alternative rather than a fallback. There is also a menu-bar command centre with a tile grid and a recent-capture strip, and the app can run menu-bar-only with no Dock icon at all.
Why the hotkeys use Control-Option
Global shortcut space on a Mac is contested. Conferencing apps, launchers, note-takers and window managers all register their own, and when two applications claim the same combination macOS quietly awards it to one of them — which is why a capture shortcut can stop working the day after you install something unrelated.
Control-Option is far less contested. Snip Studio's hotkeys register system-wide and need no Accessibility permission, which removes another common cause of "it worked until the OS update".
Changing a shortcut
Every hotkey is rebindable in Snip Studio's settings. If one does nothing, a conflict is the overwhelmingly likely cause — see Mac screenshot not working for the diagnostic, which takes about thirty seconds.
On non-US keyboards
The hotkeys bind to physical key positions, so they behave the same on any layout. What changes is which keys sit where — on some layouts a modifier is needed for the character itself, and a few third-party layouts remap Control. If a shortcut fires the wrong thing, check the binding in settings rather than assuming it is broken.
When a shortcut is not the right tool
A hotkey is the right answer for a capture you take once. For one you take the same way every day, an automation removes the decision entirely.
An automation is a trigger, some conditions and a list of actions. The trigger is either after every capture or on demand — and an on-demand automation can have its own global hotkey, which effectively lets you define capture shortcuts of your own.
Conditions match on the source app, the website, the capture type, the window or page title, recognised text, the display, or the width and height, combined with AND and OR. So "captures from Safari, wider than 1200px" is expressible.
Actions include running text recognition, copying the image or the text, redacting, saving to a folder, exporting a PDF, pinning to the screen, showing a notification, opening the editor, or running a macOS Shortcut. Redact actions bake into everything downstream, so a rule that redacts and then saves cannot accidentally write the unredacted version.
Shortcuts, the app
Snip Studio exposes App Intents, so it appears in the Shortcuts app: there is a capture-area intent and one that runs text recognition on whatever is on your clipboard. That second one is more useful than it sounds — it turns any image you have copied, from anywhere, into text.
There is also a URL scheme and a command-line helper for driving captures from outside the app, both part of the ULTRA upgrades.
The menu bar, if you prefer it
Alongside the HUD there is a menu-bar command centre with a tile grid of capture modes and a strip of recent captures. Snip Studio can run menu-bar-only with no Dock icon at all, which suits people who would rather it stayed out of the way entirely.
Capturing and the searchable library are free. Automations, the editor, recording, scroll capture and the Safari extension are part of the paid ULTRA upgrades, bought in-app through Apple.
